Fiscal Agent:

A Fiscal Agent is a formal arrangement in which AREF sponsors programs that lack exempt status. AREF provides this service to groups whose mission and vision are complementary to the foundations and who are committed to addressing the needs of the students and families in the Alum Rock School District. This arrangement allows sponsored groups to seek grants and solicit tax-deductible donations under our exempt status. AREF supports their efforts to raise funds to support the programs and activities offered by the group(s).

Sponsored groups do their own grant writing and other fund raising work. Under this arrangement AREF performs a channeling function by assuming expenditure responsibility for donations and grant money. AREF maintains separate records of income and disbursements related to each sponsored group. Funds are disbursed solely at the direction of the sponsored group. Each sponsored group must comply with restrictions and requirements imposed by donors, government and foundations, including accurate and timely reporting.

The foundation serves as Fiscal Agent for the following groups:

The Alum Rock Jazz Program
AREF supports the program’s efforts to raise funds to support the programs and activities offered by the Jazz Band Program. The Alum Rock Jazz Band is a “Big Band” format group that showcases 28-30 of the most talented students in the Alum Rock District. Their repertoire includes big-band jazz, classic rock, show tunes, and popular songs. The Alum Rock Jazz Band has won many awards and accolades over the years from the city, county and state, including the prestigious Glenn Hoffman Award for outstanding Innovative Programs. The program also provides summer activities for students at the district and in collaboration with San Jose Jazz Society and Stanford’s Summer Jazz Program.

The Alum Rock Mariachi Program
AREF supports the program’s efforts to raise funds to support the programs and activities offered by the Alum Rock Mariachi program. Created in 1998, the program is open to Alum Rock students in 3rd through 8th grades and offers both an after school and a summer program that serves over 300 students annually. This Bilingual Cultural Performing Arts program focuses on the folkloric music of the southwest region of Mexico known as the music of the Mariachi. In 2002, the Mariachi Tradicional de Alum Rock was created to motivate the most advanced students in the program. This provides students with an opportunity to strive for excellence in an advanced performance group. The group has performed for the City of San Jose, the Santa Clara County Office of Education, and at various conferences and public recognition events.

Alum Rock Music Boosters
Several Alum Rock School District music programs have gathered together to create the Alum Rock Music Boosters in order to support ARUSD Music Programs. The “Boosters” will manage the overall fundraising efforts of the various programs participating. The AR Music Boosters are excited about inviting and engaging parents and the community in their fundraising efforts. The foundation is pleased to serve as the Fiscal Agent for this new group and we look forward to supporting their efforts. Additional information about the group and its activities will be posted as it is developed.
